Rev. Raymond B. Kemp conducted his workshop “Preaching the Just Word” with John Donahue, S.J., Larry Boadt, C.P.S. and John Carr of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops for over 75 priests in Los Angeles, California during June. He participated in the Chautauqua Institute conference “The Cities of the 21st Century” with Woodstock fellow Dolores Leckey in Chautauqua, New York during July. He served as Catholic Chaplain for this weeklong conference. He also made a “Faith in the City” presentation at the conference. He is collaborating with Sister Nancy Sheridan, SASV, on a new book creating a model and resources on praying for preachers. He gave a talk to the Northern Virginia community on biblical justice during August. He conducted a day of retreat for faculty and staff of Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland. There was the customary long waiting list of Georgetown University students who have enrolled for Father Kemp's course “The Church and the Poor”. He guides these students into the great areas of needs throughout our nation's capital. Dolores Leckey gave a lecture followed by discussion on her book, The Laity and Christian Education, for the adult formation series at St. Charles parish in Arlington, Virginia in June. She also submitted a book review to Theological Studies in June. In July, with Fr. Ray Kemp, she attended the Chautauqua Institute in New York which explored the theme “The Cities of the 21st Century,” material related to Woodstock’s new project, Theology (or Faith) in the City. She will be developing some articles from these learnings. In July, August, and September, she continued work on a book in a series focused on Catholic women’s spirituality for the 21st century. James L. Nolan participated in the National Leadership Roundtable Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 27 – 29. He addressed leaders of Catholic business schools at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul,Minnesota on July 9 – 11. He conducted a meeting of the Advisory Board of Woodstock’s Arrupe Program in Washington, DC on August 28, 2007. The Catholic Press Association awarded his book Doing the Right Thing at Work: a Catholic’s Guide to Faith, Business and Ethics third place in the Book of the Year competition within the Professional Books category at their annual meeting on May 31, 2007. The citation commended the book as “…very practical, certainly reflective … [and] provides the necessary tools that a person in business might use to frame the questions and arrive at the most helpful decision…” Thomas J. Reese, S.J., gave five lectures in San Francisco, sponsored by The Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at the University of San Francisco during July. The topics included “How to Survive as a Thinking Catholic in the Church,” “Challenges Facing the Church in the 21st Century,” “Reforming the Vatican Curia,” and “Faith and Politics in 2008.” In June he met with the Board of Directors of The Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley to advise them on electronic publishing. He spoke to the California Catholic Charities directors on the Encyclical Letter of Pope Benedict XVI “Deus Caritas Est”. During this period, he appeared on “Larry King Live” on CNN, was interviewed by NPR and was quoted in numerous media outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Reuters, Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Associated Press, Baltimore Sun, USA Today, Montreal Gazette, Chicago Tribune, U.S. News & World Report, Louisville Courier-Journal, and Beliefnet.com. The topics included the appointment of bishops, the sexual abuse crisis and the Tridentine Mass. He contributes an “On Faith” column at newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/. Philip J. Rosato, S.J., served as recorder for the workshop “Emergent Catholicity” at the annual convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America, which was convened by Woodstock fellow John Haughey, S.J. in Los Angeles, California on June 8. He was part of the team of scholars working on Woodstock’s Catholic Higher Education project convoked by Woodstock fellow John Haughey, S.J. at St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles on June 9 – 10. He was Director of the Spiritual Exercises for members of the English province of The Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus, a women’s religious community whose constitutions are based on the Society of Jesus. The retreat was conducted at the motherhouse of the Sisters in North Foreland, Broadstairs, Kent, England. John C. Haughey, S.J., conducted the workshop “Emergent Catholicity” at the annual convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America in Los Angeles, California on June 8. He convoked his team of scholars working on Woodstock’s Catholic Higher Education project at Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles on June 9 – 10. He addressed a group of Pakistani educators on “Open Narratives” at Georgetown University which was sponsored by the University’s Prince Alwaleed Center of Christian-Muslim Understanding on June 26. He chaired a two-day session of faculty at Seton Hall University who desire to relate their syllabi and the Catholic intellectual tradition in South Orange, New Jersey on June 27 and June 28. He addressed leaders of Catholic business schools on the mission of their schools and the catholic intellectual tradition at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul,Minnesota on July 8 - 10. He participated in an international meeting of Jesuits whose primary work is either in Jewish – Christian relations or Christian-Muslim relations at Georgetown University on August 1 – August 6. He conducted the workshop “Spirituality of Work” sponsored by the Woodstock Business Conference at Wernersville, Pennsylvania on September 14 - 16. He made a presentation “Eucharist and the Academy” at St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana on September 27. He conducted a workshop for faculty at Loyola University on engaging the Catholic intellectual tradition through their syllabi in Chicago, Illinois on September 28 – 29. See Also: |
