General Requirements for International Visiting Fellows:

Catherine Halvey Goodwin, Brazil

Commitment. The Visiting Fellowship must be the primary commitment of each visiting fellow during his or her stay in the United States. The topic of research must be the same topic that was proposed in the fellowship application. Fellows should not take classes, devote substantial time to other groups or organizations, or otherwise engage in activities that impede their ability to successfully complete their International Visiting Fellowship research project.

Home Country. Each Visiting Fellow must return to his or her home country at the conclusion of his or her fellowship. No visa extensions are granted.

Fellowship Product. Before departing at the end of the fellowship, each Visiting Fellow is expected to submit a paper that either contains or summarizes the research carried out by the Visiting Fellow in pursuit of the objectives stated in his or her fellowship application. A portion of this paper should be edited for posting on the Woodstock International Visiting Fellows website.

Mid-year Report. Long-term fellows (those with fellowships lasting 6 or more months) must submit a mid-year report delineating project progress. Each report is to be reviewed by the project manager and followed up with a personal meeting.

Work space & resources provided. Fellows are expected to make full use of the resources provided by Woodstock. Fellows who have been granted carrel space in the Woodstock Library are expected to use the carrel at least 30 hours per week, and to make productive use of any computers or printers supplied by the Center. In order to maximize the value of their research, all Visiting Fellows are expected to avail themselves of the network of faculty and staff who are available for consultation, through their affiliation with Woodstock.

Mandatory Events. International Visiting Fellows commit to participating in the following Woodstock events:

  • Meetings among Visiting Fellows. This is a private, monthly discussion among visiting fellows about their study and writing projects. At the first meeting, each IVF will present her or his project proposal and current research and writing, with questions and comments by the others. The Visiting Fellows themselves will then determine the contents and format of their future discussions.
  • Monthly Woodstock Brown Bag Lunch Series. In the fall, Visiting Fellows present their project ideas to a gathering of Woodstock fellows, staff, and selected guests; and before departing in late spring, they present the work they have accomplished. Brown bag lunches take place monthly, and last from 12:00 pm till 1:30 pm.
  • IVF monthly social gathering for dinner. Dinner can be at a local restaurant. The group, with the coordination of Matthew Hummer, can decide on time and place. Also joining them for dinner will be a Woodstock Senior Research Fellow.
