The Woodstock Theological Center has issued volume three of the proceedings in a series of colloquia on forgiveness in conflict resolution, Forgiveness in Conflict Resolution: Reality and Utility--The Bosnian Experience. This colloquium was sponsored by the Woodstock Theological Center on the Georgetown University campus on October 24, 1997. The colloquia are part of a Woodstock study and consultation that aims to discover and describe the meaning and applicability of "forgiveness" in the resolution of conflict situations. This study is partially funded by the United States Institute of Peace.
In the first chapter, Religion in Bosnia: The Roles of the Three Major Faiths, Dr. William F. Vendley, World Conference on Religion and Peace, discusses his recent experience in Bosnia seeking to enlist the support of leaders of the Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim faiths in promoting conflict resolution and these leaders' views on the utility of "forgiveness" in seeking resolution of the conflict.
In the second chapter, The History of Grievances: Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim Memories, Professor Paul B. Mojzes, Rosemont College, traces centuries' long grievances in the Balkans that brought about the recent conflict. He relates the root causes of the conflict and discusses the particular grievances each group has against the other.
In the third chapter, Political Prospects After Dayton, the Honorable Warren Zimmerman, former Ambassador to Yugoslavia, the Honorable John Menzies, former Ambassador to Bosnia, and Dr. Susan W. Woodward, senior fellow, The Brookings Institution, discuss political prospects for peace under the Dayton Accords and the political future of Bosnia.
In the fourth chapter, Recent Developments in Conflict Resolution: The Forgiveness Factor, Dr. Douglas M. Johnson, Jr., and Olga Botcharova, Center for Strategic and International Studies, discuss the role of "forgiveness" in the conflict resolution workshops they are directing with victims and aggressors in the conflict in Bosnia.
Each chapter is followed by a summary discussion by the participants in the colloquium, which included academics, diplomats, conflict resolution specialists, government officials, and church leaders.
