Jesuit Spiritual Center at Wernersville

The Woodstock Business Conference will be holding its fourth annual retreat in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, September 14-16, 2007. The retreat, entitled "At Work: The Inside Story," will focus on these questions:

  • Our work desires -- what are they good for?
  • What are their sources?
  • What is the good we seek to do at work?
  • Who benefits?
  • What blocks our purposes?

The retreat will be led by Woodstock fellows John Haughey, S.J., and Jim Nolan, along with Catherine Nerney, SSJ. Participants will gain a deeper and more intimate knowledge of all that God has lovingly shared with them so that, filled with gratitude, they can respond with love and service in their work and in their lives.

To register or find further information on the retreat, visit the Jesuit Spiritual Center website.

On March 21, Woodstock's Interreligious Dialogue on Education sponsored an evening of open interreligious conversation for students. Representatives of five religious traditions served on the panel and engaged students on questions including: Is religion a problem or a solution? Do religious differences really matter? Why dialogue: conversion or conversation?

Tom Reese, S.J.

Woodstock fellow Tom Reese, S.J., is a featured blogger on the Washington Post-Newsweek religion blog, "On Faith." He answers weekly questions, most recently on the relative importance of faith and works, religion and the Democratic party, and keeping faith during wartime.

An index of all of his blog postings is available on the site.

Bill Bole

Woodstock fellow Bill Bole has written a new book, together with Bob Abernathy, entitled The Life of Meaning: Reflections on Faith, Doubt, and Repairing the World (Seven Stories Press). The book, which was featured in Gasper Lo Biondo's letter, gathers contributions from fifty-nine religious and spiritual thinkers across denominations and faiths. It contains both personal stories of faith and the broader insights for communities, societies, and religious institutions.

Ray Kemp (photo by John Whitman)

Woodstock fellow Ray Kemp delivered the graduation address at Washington Theological Union's commencement on May 4. His address (available in pdf), delivered on the weekend of his 40th anniversary of ordination, drew upon his own experience as a priest in Washington, D.C., to explore how theology fits into a life of faith. He encouraged the graduates to follow the Gospel and reach beyond their comfort zones, encounter the marginalized, and speak for the voiceless.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, E.J. Dionne, Ray Kemp

On April 10, Ray Kemp spoke on a panel with former Maryland lieutenant governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne on "Failing America's Faithful." The event was sponsored by the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.

Peter Phan

The Woodstock brown bag lunch series continued, featuring presentations by two prominent Georgetown theologians.

On April 25, Peter Phan spoke about "Christology in the Pluralistic Context."

On May 16, Jack Haught, S.J., presented on "Theology and Evolution: How Much Can Biology Explain?"

Woodstock continues to co-sponsor of the lecture series commemorating the 40th anniversary of Nostra Ætate, the Second Vatican Council's document on interreligious dialogue. The lecture series, organized by the Office of the President of Georgetown University, brings together lecturers from various traditions and experiences to examine both ancient and contemporary questions of interreligious understanding. Past lectures include Dr. William Vendley, Secretary General of The World Conference of Religions for Peace on March 27 and Rabbi David Rosen, President of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultation on May 2.

On September 24, (time and location to be determined) - His Eminence Paul Joseph Jean Cardinal Poupard, President of the Pontifical Councils for Culture and Interreligious Dialogue, will speak.

Webcasts of past lectures and a schedule of upcoming lectures can be found on the President's Office web page.
