Finals are upon us! Depending on where you are in your Hilltop journey, you may be trying to finish your first year strong or running headlong toward the end of your college career. Either way, the library is here to help you make the most of your Lauinger study sessions, nail your research projects, and end your semester on a high note.

Tip #1: Take breaks

Get up and walk around. Go outside if the weather permits. Grab a snack from the Midnight Mug. There is a limit to how much information your brain can take in for an extended period of time and you’ll do well to give yourself a few minutes away from your screen and/or books long before you reach that threshold.

Tip #2: Get help from a librarian anywhere on campus.

If you’re having trouble finding something in the library or on our website, you can instantly talk to a librarian online whenever the Service Desk is open. Our librarians are here to help! But do remember that there is a human being on the other line and not a chatbot. You cannot trick them into doing your project for you.

Tip #3: Change up your location

Is your roommate’s study playlist a little loud for your taste? Can’t find a spot in Lau 2? Need to be around others or all by yourself? Whether you need a designated quiet space, an individual or group study room, or open computer labs, the library has the right space for you.

Tip #4: Don't get overwhelmed starting your research

Sometimes the hardest part of research is simply knowing where to start. Librarians have prepared hundreds of research guides pointing you to the best resources for every topic. Library staff are also available for consultations to help you find all the sources you’ll need for research projects.

Tip #5: Stay Fully charged with new portable power banks

Tired of looking for an outlet in the library? Check out one of the library’s new Omnicharge Portable Power Banks from the third-floor Service Desk and charge your phone, laptop, table and other devices through a fast and reliable charger.

Tip #6: Check out whatever other equipment you need, too.

The Library also has regular laptop and phone chargers, ear plugs, dry-erase board markers, laptop locks, and headphones available for check-out at the Lauinger Service Desk. See all available equipment here.

Tip #7: Come pet some dogs.

Volunteers from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs are bringing their canine companions to the library. Penny the Irish doodle will be at the library May 7 from 2–3:30 p.m., Max the French bulldog will be on site May 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and Keeva the golden retriever will visit the Library May 8 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. According to our friends at Johns Hopkins, research shows that simply petting a dog lowers the stress hormone cortisol, which sounds like enough reason to come hang out with some furry friends in Lauinger.
